The objective of this poker glossary is to introduce novice players to poker terminology and to explain the main concept of poker game.

• All In: An option that allows a player who does not have enough money to make a bet or a raise to place all the money he has and to be eligible to win a part of the pot that corresponds to this amount.
• Ante: A forced bet placed by all players before the game starts.
• Betting Limit: A value that defines the size of allowed bets and raises in the game.
• Betting Round: A round where players bet, raise or fold.
• Big Blind: A blind bet that normally is twice bigger that the small blind in a game with two blinds.
• Blind: A forced bet placed by a number of the players regardless of their cards.
• Collusion: A conspiracy between two or more players with an objective to get an advantage over other players at the table.
• Community Cards: Cards that can (or must) be used by all players in order to combine their final hands.
• Down-card: A card placed face-down.
• Draw Poker: A poker game where players can discard a number of their cards and replace them by new ones.
• Draw: An act of replacing cards in Draw poker games.
• Eight or Better: A qualifier that allows only eight-high or lower hands to be played as low hands.
• Fixed Limit: A betting limit that defines the exact size of allowed bets and raises.
• Flush: A poker hand that consists of five cards of the same suit.
• Forced Bet: A bet that must be placed regardless of the decision of the player.
• Four of a Kind: A poker hand that contains four cards of the same rank.
• Full House: A poker hand that contains three cards of the same rank and two cards of the same rank.
• Guts Poker: A poker game where players declare In or Out before the showdown and players who declare In, but lose match the pot.
• Hand: All cards belonging to a certain player.
• Hands Ranking: A scheme that defines the strength of poker hands.
• High: A game format where the player with the highest card at the table wins the pot.
• High Card: The lowest poker hand that does not contain any poker combinations and is valued by the highest card in the hand.
• High/Low (Hi-Lo): A game format where the player with the highest hand at the table and the player with the lowest one split the pot.
• Hole Card: A down-card that belongs to a certain player.
• Joker: An extra card that can be used as a completely or partly wild card or have other special functions.
• Jacks or Better: A variation of draw poker where only players with a pair of Jacks or a better hand can open betting and win the pot.
• Lowball: A game format with reversed hands ranking. The player with the lowest hand at the table wins the pot.
• No Limit: A betting limit that allows players to place bets of any size.
• Pair: A poker hand that contains two cards of the same rank.
• Pot: A sum of money that consists of all bets placed in the same game.
• Pot Limit: A betting limit that allows players to place bets of any size that is not larger than the total size of the pot.
• Qualifier: A certain poker hand that that separates hands that can be played as low hands from those that can be played as high hands in Hi-Lo games. In other words, if a player has a hand higher than the qualifier, he can not play low.
• Royal Flush: A hand that consists of 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of the same suit (same as Straight Flush, but with the highest cards).
• Showdown: A game round where players reveal their cards and compare their hands. (also a poker variation where all cards are dealt face-up).
• Straight: A hand that consists of five cards of consequent ranks.
• Straight Flush: A hand that consists of five consequent cards of the same suit.
• Table Stakes: Usually a fixed betting limit used at a certain table.
• Three of a Kind: A poker hand that contains three cards of the same rank.
• Two Pairs: A hand that contains two pairs of matching cards.
• Up-card: A card placed face-up.
