Learn to Play Klondike Solitaire

Probably the most famous solitaire game is the game of Klondike. Most likely, if you know only one game of solitaire, it is most likely Klondike.

First mentioned as a game around the late 1880s in the US shortly after the gold rush in California and Alaska, the name Klondike should come from a mountainous area in Alaska.

Listed here are the rules of the game, and how to play and how to set up the game.

Layout

The layout of the game works like this, you deal out 7 different columns or foundations. Each foundations top card will always be face up, so to start the layout you deal one card on the left face up, and then make 6 more columns to the right of the first one all face down. Continue like this until you have dealt one face up card to each pile and filling the foundations with their cards. The last pile or foundation should have 7 cards in total including the face up card.

The 24 remaining cards form the deck from with which you will draw cards to play on top of your foundations.

The Object of Klondike

The object of Klondike is to remove all cards from the layout onto the four different aces which will appear at different times during the game. When an ace appears you can pull it from the playing field to its home, and then afterwards you can start to build upon the home of the particular suit.

This means that you must remove each and every last card onto the foundations of the aces from the ace to the king in sequential and suited order before beating Klondike.

To play cards in the field you must place them in numerical order with alternating colors, meaning that a black does not go on black, and vice versa. When a foundation has an exposed card turned face down then it must be turned over to be able to be played.

When a foundation is used up and an empty space appears then and only then can a king take the place of the empty space.

When you have certain card combinations like a red 6 and a black 7 sitting together on foundation, you can if possible move the 6 and the 7 together to a red 8 exposing the foundation underneath revealing another card.

To Play

To use the cards that have formed the deck, you shall up turn the top three, and remember the order in which you did this, you will have to repeat it at all times, and then the top card when turned to you can be in turn used by placing it on a foundation if possible. If possible then you are able to use the card underneath it that has become exposed. If not then draw three more cards in the same fashion until you either are able to move all the cards to the foundations or to the homes of the aces or until you have no more moves allowed to you in which case you lose.

You can re deal the cards in the deck that you used during the game, it is not possible to shuffle them, but you can reuse them until it seems that no further move is possible.
