Indian Tribe Continue Casino Plan Despite Protests

2006-03-02 09:21:00
Jamul Indian tribe prepared an environmental review and plan to go on with the building.

Jamul Indian tribe plan to develop a 30 story casino hotel is about to come true. Since the plan was brought up in 2003, residents of the area opposed to the idea of building a casino inside their rural surrounding.

County officials, especially Supervisor Diane Jacob who represents the area, have been opposing to the tribe casino plan since 2003. According to tribe representative, the tribe prepared an environmental review, and if the state approves they plan to start with the casino building.

Two meeting took place recently between the tribe representatives and the state officials. In February, Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneggers office claimed that the work was being done for the casino is illegal since no environmental review has been filed yet. Rod Wilson, the communications director for the tribe, claimed the letter was a misunderstanding, since the only work done for the casino was a ceremonial groundbreaking.

The casino planned drew protests both from nearby residents and from state officials. Jacobs believes the areas transportation would not be able to handle a 30 story casino.
