Group of Bethlehem citizens are trying to organize a protest against casino building. The group contains 50 members and call themselves Citizens for a Better Bethlehem. They had a meeting that took place on Wednesday, and pressed their members to write to state officials and ask for a hearing regarding the casino plan.
The group aim is to disrupt Las Vegas Sands Corp. request to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board for a casino license. The Sands 300 million dollars casino plan will contain 500 slot machines. The groups funding will remain confidential because they decided against the definition as a nonprofit group.
The BethWorks Now developers have claimed that a failure in winning the casino license would destroy their plan for an entertainment, trade and residential redevelopment that will preserve 23 old Bethlehem Steel structures. Mark Reagle from Bethlehem Township who participated in the group meeting claimed that casinos have a negative affect on the community.
